A shout-out to everyone who contributed this year. Some phenomenal observations and image captures that helped Surrey contribute to making Metro Vancouver the national lead at over 14,000 observation, beating Montreal by just over 20!

Metro Vancouver also ranked 33rd in North and South America as part of the international results.

In Awe, Inspired, and In Admiration

C'est avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme que nous vous remercions pour votre participation au DNU cette année. Nous reviendrons sous peu avec les résultats officiels, une fois que la Fédération canadienne de la faune les a compilé pour le Canada et que l'équipe DNU global a compilé les résultats à l'échelle internationale. Why are infants of the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) less cursorial than those of the common impala (Aepyceros melampus)?

The pronghorn (Antilocapridae: Antilocapra americana) is hypercursorial ().

Among bovids, the most cursorial species belong to the tribe Alcelaphini, which run with great speed and endurance. However, the pronghorn is more cursorial than any alcelaphin.

However, the pronghorn is anomalous in a certain way: its infants hide immobile for three weeks before they and their mothers resume their normal gregariousness.

Апрельский биоблиц

Друзья, закончился четвёртый месяц проекта, сейчас к нему присоединилось 264 (+31) наблюдателя, 258 (+27) из которых уже поделились своими наблюдениями.

На большей части страны шёл активный прилёт птиц, поэтому результаты апреля весьма впечатляющие: в проекте уже загружены наблюдения для 393 (+162) видов, общее количество наблюдений приближается к 95.000 (+33.000).

Diagnosis from Zoia 2009: Legs black/metallic blue (not with reddish tibiae), sometimes with bronze or geenish reflections. Antennae black with articles 2 to 6 partially reddish. Elytra: punctures irregular, not or poorly arranged in longitudinal rows, in places separated by smooth logitudinal costae; each elytron with a longitudinal costa, starting from the humerus and almost reaching the elytral apex; elytral setae sparse, yellowish or whitish in colour, curved.

Рекомендации к фотографированию споровых растений

Если у растения есть структуры, связанные с размножением - лучше постараться сфотографировать их тоже (можно добавить несколько фото к наблюдению, если на одном не помещаются). Например, у папоротников сорусы со спорангиями чаще всего расположены с нижней стороны листа - стоит сфотографировать и её тоже. У мхов можно постараться заснять коробочку, если она есть.

Spiders

Spiders, but also unknown flying objects, have never been my friends - ok at a distance (social distancing), but not so cool too close.
Since I started using iNaturalist, I've been outside a lot more often and exploring nature (I think you can also see that in the number of observations 😜). But for the last few weeks I've been particularly fond of spiders and I can't get enough of them, especially the jumping spiders are so cute with their lovely faces.
